About WkD – Our method and our team

German that works in real life: at work, at university, at the public office and in the conversation next door.

WkD is an online language school for German. We teach 100 percent live, in small groups or in private lessons. There are no video courses to work through and no automatic learning programmes that leave you on your own. At WkD there is always a teacher in the room with you, even when the room is a screen.

Our participants almost always have a concrete goal: vocational training, a degree or a job in a German-speaking country. That is what we build the lessons around.

Natural German instead of textbook language

In many courses you learn sentences that hardly anyone actually says in everyday life. You only notice it when you are standing in front of someone who speaks fast, swallows words and changes direction in the middle of a sentence.

That is why we work with spoken German from the very beginning: with sentences as they really occur on the phone, at work or in a waiting room. You also learn what to say when you have not understood something. In everyday life that is often more important than a flawless subordinate clause.

Our benchmark is not the textbook, it is the conversation. You should understand what people really say, and be heard and understood yourself.

Compact courses with a clear goal

Most of our participants are adults with little time. That is why our courses are densely built. We leave out whatever does nothing for your goal, and spend that time on what you do need: everyday life, vocational training, study or work.

The groups are small, 5 to 12 participants. That is not a side note, it is the reason why everyone gets to speak in class. In a group of thirty people you say two sentences in 45 minutes.

Our level system

We follow the levels A1 to C1, but we set our own focus in each one. This is how it builds up:

  • A1, speaking. You start with your mouth, not with a grammar table. First understanding, then speaking, much like a child learning its first language.
  • A2, grammar and everyday life. Now the order comes in. You clarify the rules you have already been using while speaking, and you handle doctor's appointments, official errands and shopping on your own.
  • B1+, work and applications. Applications, job interviews, phone calls, emails and the tone in a company. This is usually where it is decided whether a training place or a job works out.
  • B2 and C1, intensive. More demanding topics, longer texts, free argumentation, presentations. For studying and for professions in which language is the tool.

Which level suits you is something we work out together beforehand. A certificate alone tells us little; what counts is what you can do in a conversation.

Exam preparation with a mock exam

Our exam preparation is a separate short course of 15 teaching units. We train the structure of the exam, the task types and the timing, and we work specifically on the places where you get stuck.

At the end there is a complete mock exam. You already know the exam situation before it counts. We prepare you for telc, Goethe and g.a.s.t./TestDaF.

WkD is not an examination centre. We do not administer exams and we do not issue official certificates. You sit the exam at an official examination centre; we help you find a suitable one. From us you receive a certificate of attendance.

Personal support

We are small enough to know every person in the course. That includes:

  • After every lesson you get a personal PDF with your corrections, new words and sentences from exactly that lesson.
  • Between lessons you can ask questions, by email or via WhatsApp. You do not have to wait until the next session.
  • You regularly get honest feedback on where you stand.
  • In private lessons we explain difficult content in your mother tongue too if you wish, as far as we speak it.

No unnecessary homework

We do not hand out tasks to make the course look full. If you are given something, it is because it moves you forward and because it fits into your day. The real work happens in class, where someone listens and corrects.

AI as a personal learning companion

There are often several days between two lessons. We show you how to use AI sensibly in that time: for practising, for revising, for planning your week and for getting feedback on individual texts. You learn which questions to ask and how to tell when an answer is wrong.

AI supports our teaching, it does not replace it. At WkD, people teach. We do not analyse your lessons automatically and we do not put any of your data into AI programmes. What you use for practising yourself is your decision.

Our team

WkD is not a one-person operation. We work as a team, with native-speaker and non-native-speaker teachers. Both have their value: native speakers bring the natural sound, and teachers who learned German themselves know from their own experience where things typically get stuck.

WkD stands for Weltklasse Deutsch, world-class German. Our teaching is online, so it does not matter where you are right now. What matters is where you want to go.

Who we are here for

For people who need German for vocational training, study or work in a German-speaking country. For adults and working people with little time. And for everyone who has already learned German and still notices: in a conversation it is not yet enough.
